Latham & Watkins LLP Perspective


History

Founded by Dana Latham & Paul Watkins in 1934, Latham & Watkins has grown rapidly in the past several years, doubling in size since 1987 to become one of the nation's most influential law firms. Recognized for its corporate work, Latham made its mark in the go-go '80s, riding a steady stream of work on high-yield debt structuring for Drexel Burnham Lambert and junk bond king Michael Milken. In 1988, while representing Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) in its takeover of RJR Nabisco, L&W needed to ship 680 cartons of documents to the Federal Trade Commission in Washington overnight. The firm discovered that the cheapest way to transport the documents was to rent a DC-9 jet, which they promptly did. In 1989, Latham broke into the top 10 of The American Lawyer's annual revenue list, pulling in $187 million.

Tips from the inside

According to a senior associate, “The firm is looking to hire someone who fits the ‘Latham mold.’  The firm prides itself on hiring people that are easy to get along with-- ‘normal’ people. This often means that the more ‘bookish’ law school types will be passed over even if the academics are in line.”  An insider reveals that the firm has a “unique” hiring process wherein which “interviewees first have an interview with department partners and then have a half-day of interviews with other partners and associates from the firm.  This allows interviewees to meet lots of associates before joining and get a feel for the firm.”  Several associates agree that while “there are minimum standards which are pretty high,” personality is a “key factor” in getting hired.
