Kirkland & Ellis LLP Perspective

Getting Hired

Tips from the inside

“Who’s getting hired in this economy?”  While associates admit that Kirkland’s hiring process “has gone from tough to extremely competitive over the past couple of years,” there are still a few standout qualities that help certain candidates rise above the pack.  A Los Angeles associate explains, “Kirkland is an extremely competitive firm and expects the best of the best.  However, it also understands that sometimes the best of the best may be from a law school other than the top 14.”  But “if you are from a lower ranked law school you’d better be at the top of your class.”  A corporate associate elaborates, “We’re looking for self-starters and assertive types – you have to beat your own path around here, so it’s important to be entrepreneurial and confident.”

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
