ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

The Pegasus and the tiger

Number One on the 2008 Fortune 500 list of the biggest companies in America is the largest publicly traded oil producer and distributor worldwide: ExxonMobil.  Just how big is it?  Its annual net income regularly exceeds the GDP of all but about 60 countries.

The company is enmeshed in all stages of the energy-producing process, from “upstream” (mainly exploration) to “downstream” (refining, supply and production) to sales.  It also is involved in the development of other products and petrochemicals (used as fuel additives, lubricants or in plastics), which by itself is a $50 billion-plus business.

Exxon Mobil Corp. SURVEY SAYS

An age-old culture?

While most call ExxonMobil “an excellent company” and “a great experience,” quite a few employees disdain the company’s suffocating bureaucracy.  “The corporate culture at [Exxon Mobil] is what you would typically expect from a big corporation: bureaucratic … and full of policies to ensure productive employees and continuous operational improvement,” one source says.  Another confirms that “Hours tend to be long due to the rating and ranking process, which forces supervisors to rank employees top to bottom.  Opportunities for advancement are never very clear and tend to occur behind closed doors.”

Tips from the inside

Join the colossus

The first thing a visitor to ExxonMobil’s careers site (at www.ExxonMobil.com/Corporate/careers.aspx) must do is pick a country of interest from the map of nearly 80 sites in six continents (sorry Antarctica!).  Each link leads to a national recruitment web site, some of which contain job postings (others hold only address, fax or email contact information).
