ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Batting for both sides

Republicans and Democrats may not agree on much, but both major political parties have sought the services of Edelman, the Chicago-based public relations firm. On the political front, Edelman has not only provided strategy for the Carter, Reagan, Bush and Clinton administrations (often simultaneously serving the campaigns of Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis and other rivals), but has provided PR for the governments of Mexico, Israel and Chile. In the world of business, the company counts blue-chip corporations such as AT&T, General Motors, Chrysler and Microsoft among its clients. With about 3,100 employees and offices in 51 offices in 24 countries, Edelman is a force to be reckoned with in the PR industry.

SURVEY SAYS

Amazing but grueling

Sources describe working for the firm as a “very rich” and “great” experience. An insider from New York says that it’s a “great place to work,” while one in Chicago says, “The company is very clear and open about its broad global strategy, how it integrates its offices and departments, its capabilities and its priorities. It’s clear that people enjoy working here, as evidenced by the many-year veterans within our office and the level of pride floating through the cubes.”

Tips from the inside

Follow the rules

The careers section of Edelman’s website (www.edelman.com) clearly lays out the application process. Step one is to browse the PR firm’s list of current openings, which are sorted by location and contain general information about responsibilities and qualifications. Candidates who find a posting of interest are directed to an online application involving standard questions about employment history and applicable skills. Once an application has been submitted, it will be forwarded to the appropriate contact; an Edelman representative will contact individuals selected for further consideration. Although there is a general recruiting contact, the company advises prospective employees that this email address is for questions or technical problems only.
