ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
The thunder from Down Under
The Australian-based airline Qantas carried some 28 million passengers on its planes in fiscal 2008. Along with its low-fare subsidiary, JetStar, and its shuttle airline, QantasLink, the company operates regional routes to 56 cities within Australia and to nearly 90 cities in Asia, Europe and the U.S. Qantas' other subsidiaries provide inflight catering, air freight services (notable pieces of cargo have included Formula One cars and equipment for a Rolling Stones tour), plane maintenance and overhaul, and wholesale travel packages. The airline also maintains the QANTAS Founders Outback Museum, which features an exhibit where visitors can tour a retired 747.

Tips from the inside
Take a kangaroo hop
Qantas' careers site, www.qantas.com.au/info/about/employment/index, provides job
seekers with information on open positions at the company. At press time, the
company had openings for pilots, flight simulator instructors and cabin crew in the
U.K. and in New Zealand. Cabin crew must meet a minimum height requirement,
pass a swim test and show their ability to lift a 60-pound plane door in the event of
an emergency.
