    ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

    The Canadian connection

Torys LLP is a small firm that understands the importance of strategic, constant and gradual growth. Founded in 1943 by prominent Toronto business lawyer John S. D. Tory, Tory's twin sons Jim and John inherited the firm along with fellow classmates Arthur Binnington and William DesLauriers in 1965 - before merging with Kimber Dubin in 1974. From the 1970s to the late 1990s, the then-named Tory Tory DesLauriers & Binnington built on Kimber Dubin's litigation expertise and political connections, including an appointment to the Ontario Court of Appeals, to solidify the firm's litigation practice. The year 2000 saw the surprising merger with much-smaller New York firm Haythe & Curley to implement Tory's longheld goal of creating a seamless border practice. Just four years later, in 2004, Global Securities Information, Inc. ranked Torys No. 31 on its list of top firms with the highest total mergers and acquisitions transaction value - a record $12,344,948,491 in gross revenue.

    SURVEY SAYS

Torys associates describe the New York office as an "extraordinarily collegial, supportive environment." They also praise their colleagues: "Most people here are very friendly and down to earth," we're told, though one senior associate notes that "people tend to form cliques." Nevertheless, numerous associates assert that "the firm emphasizes a culture of respect for associates and support staff," which, according to one insider, makes Torys "a very civilized" place to work, "relative to other New York firms." When it comes to the partnership, "Because the N.Y. office is small, associates often have lots of contact with partners, and partners are good about answering questions and explaining assignments when necessary." All in all, the firm enjoys "above-average relations between partners and associates," a source shares.

    Tips from the inside

    Help for hopefulls
According to one firm insider, "Torys doesn't hire many and they only interview at a handful of schools." The firm's web site confirms this take, indicating that Torys expects to hire only four or five summer associates, with on-campus interviews limited to four or five schools primarily in the New York region. Despite the relatively small net cast, past summer associates have come from a variety of law schools not specifically targeted by the firm. As far as Torys is concerned, if you "not only show the potential to develop excellent technical skills but also appreciate the importance of providing Vault Guide to the Top New York Law Firms excellent service and forming close, long-term relationships," then Torys may be the place for you.
