Putting their Hertz into their work

Sources report that Hertz's hiring process is fairly relaxed. "The interview was very sales and customer service oriented. 'Describe a time when you had to deal with an irate customer.' Other than that it is very corporate," says one management trainee. "Only one interview with the general manager," says another. "Hertz/Enterprise and many other rental companies are renowned for their management training programs," notes one hire enrolled in the program. Another management trainee adds, "My duties were varied, and I had to adjust to each situation, from answering the ringing phones, renting cars to customers, picking up and dropping off customers at hotels and auto repair shops, getting oil changes for cars, and & vacuuming and washing cars by hand."

IKEA's hiring process differs somewhat from the cartoon captioned "IKEA job interview," in which an interviewer presents a prospective hire with a disassembled chair and invites him to take a seat. With over 200 companies in the IKEA Group, there are opportunities aplenty in the following fields: stores, distribution, purchasing, industry group, product development, and expert and supporting functions, such as IT, communications and food services. The vast majority (80 percent) of the company's employees are based in Europe, with about 15 percent in the U.S. and the balance in Asia and Australia. Some 75 percent of the workforce is occupied with retail, only 10 percent are involved in purchasing and distribution, while about a fifth are involved in the Swedwood Group, the company's manufacturing arm.
