According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), formerly called the General Accounting Office, the agency’s mission is “to support the Congress in meeting its Constitutional responsibilities and to help improve the performance and ensure the accountability of the federal government for the benefit of the American people.”  The self-proclaimed “congressional watchdog” and “investigative arm of Congress,” the GAO is a nonpartisan arm of Congress whose core values are integrity, accountability and reliability.  In more than 80 years of independent service to Congress, it has undertaken numerous audits of other government agencies, verifying that they meet their financial and performance objectives to provide top-quality service to the American public.  The GAO also functions as an investigative agency, considering allegations of illegal or improper activities in other divisions of the government.  The GAO employs 3,150 who work in its Washington headquarters and in various regional offices in major cities across the United States.
