ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Forty-four ways to say “red”

Celebrating a hundred years of beauty and innovation, L’Oréal is the world leader in cosmetics, bringing a rosy glow to faces across the globe.  With 23 global brands in four product divisions priced to suit every pocketbook, L’Oréal boasts a compelling market presence in 130 countries and employs over 67,000 people all over the world.  L’Oréal is the only cosmetics company available in every distribution channel; this means that mass-market retailers, hair salons, department stores, pharmacies and mail-order channels all carry L’Oréal brands.  In 2008, 45 percent of L’Oréal products were sold in Western Europe; 23 percent were purchased by North Americans, and 32 percent were sold in other parts of the world.  As a pioneer in the ever-expanding science of looking good, the industrious company filed 628 patents in 2008.  As of 2008, the company recorded €17.5 billion in consolidated sales.

SURVEY SAYS

The other side of glamour

Company culture is unique, to say the least, according to insiders.  However, “It’s not glamorous like you’d think,” observes one insider.  Sources describe L’Oréal as “extremely French” and “political.”  “The company suffers from high turnover and miserable employees,” adds a co-worker.  Another source comments, “Imagine a mix of The Office with The Devil Wears Prada.  You either learn to love it or hate it … there is no in between.  Most people leave within 1-3 years.”
