ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Introducing &

With 2008 full of calamitous events at Yahoo! (the disbanded Google deal, impending layoffs, the Microsoft debacle, executive departures and a sunken stock price), it was no surprise that Jerry Yang stepped down from the top spot in November. And after weeks of whispering, Yahoo! introduced its new CEO in mid-January 2009: Carol Bartz, a former head of Autodesk with a direct management style and a solid reputation. Bartz will have to act fairly quickly to forge some strategic alliances to address the missteps of the past year and to regain investor confidence.

Yahoo! SURVEY SAYS

Kooky job titles and a loose atmosphere

Yahoo! boasts an "informal atmosphere" and a staff with "substantial industry expertise." A young company, Yahoo! offers employees a "dynamic" environment and the promise of "explosive growth" and potential riches through stock options. One contact praises the "approachable" staff and says that "Filo and Yang are down-to-earth guys. Everyone likes everyone a lot." Another insider points out that "even the biggies just have plain desks like everyone else." One employee says that she brings her pet parakeet to work "and that nobody cares. Except me and the bird." However, employees point out that Yahoo! is "navigating uncharted territory." Employees are confident that Yahoo!'s "fame among Internet users worldwide" will bring "permanent prestige" to their resumes. Insiders say they love the "kooky job titles and loose atmosphere."

Tips from the inside

A shrinking set of opportunities?

The prospect of employment at Yahoo! is not what it once was; after the company announced 1,000 layoffs in early 2008, then-CEO Jerry Yang said in October 2008 that Yahoo! would likely cut at least 10 percent of its staff in 2009. That said, the company does maintain an employment site at careers.yahoo.com, where potential employees can search through a list of available positions throughout the company by location, job title, job function and keyword search. Candidates can also electronically submit a profile or a resume/CV without applying to a specific job by creating an account on the career site. For those who don't see a specific job that catches their eye, Yahoo! accepts resumes for the future via e-mail at jobs-international@yahoo-inc.com. Prospective applicants should bear in mind, however, that due to the company's recent troubles, hiring is slow and may be frozen entirely in many departments.
