"Wal-Mart is number one, and I wouldn't want to work for number two, or three, or four," one insider says. Moreover, employees say that they are rewarded with a generous bonus plan and profit sharing that is unrivaled. "They have profit sharing, which is good, and you buy company stock, which is excellent."

We are committed to providing our associates with opportunities to grow within the company through a variety of career choices and leadership development programs. Our Corporate Intern Program, at our home office in Bentonville, Arkansas, provides unique, hands-on experience in exciting fields such as buying, aviation, real estate, global procurement, supply chain management, information systems, international, finance, logistics, product development, and many more. During a 10 to 12 week program interns learn how a successful multimillion-dollar business operates and enjoy interaction with leaders of the company through mentorship and an executive speaking series. Our MBA internship provides opportunities for the more advanced business student. Each MBA intern is assigned an specific project to work on throughout the summer to learn key business functions as well as participate in the daily functions of their team. Presentations are made on these projects at the end of each the internship to provide an overview of accomplishments as well as business impact. We partner each intern with a sponsor to help monitor and help them through this process as well as provide developmental feedback.

1,000s of new positions each year

With Wal-Mart's expansion strategy in no danger of running out of steam, the company looks to fill thousands of new positions each year. Wal-Mart refers to its human resources offices as its people divisions, and each of the company's major units has its own. However, applicants can send resumes via regular mail, fax or e-mail to the home office, and they will be entered into a central database. With its own sales and marketing force, a vast array of retail business and an information systems division in charge of keeping track of it all, the corporate headquarters needs new recruits from a wide variety of backgrounds. Those wishing to work at a particular store should apply to the store directly. For more information or to send a resume, visit the company web site.

The company has a trainee program for college grads that can extend up to 19 weeks and focuses on marketing, people management and operations. Upon completion of the program, trainees are appointed assistant store manager, with the responsibility of running a particular section of a store.
