ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Flying high

The U.S. Air Force—the aerial warfare division of America’s armed forces—has changed a great deal since it started out in 1947.  As a result, the Air Force announced a new mission statement in December 2005.  The Air Force says its mission is “to deliver sovereign options for the defense of the United States of America and its global interests—to fly and fight in Air, Space, and Cyberspace.”

Tips from the inside

Flying high

The vast majority of Air Force employees remain on the ground: less than 5 percent of people in the Air Force work as pilots.  The Air Force recruiting site, http://www.airforce.com/opportunities/enlisted/careers/, describes the available positions within each Air Force department, including information about enlisting and entering officer training.  The four basic jobs at the Air Force are mechanical careers, administrative careers, general careers and electronic careers.  All candidates must meet certain physical requirements.
