Diamonds and a dazzling reputation
For over a century and a half, Tiffany & Co. has been known for its exquisite gifts and upscale image. Today, Tiffany operates over 150 stores and boutiques around the world. Tiffany's stable of goods includes all manner of jewelry, from earrings to engagement rings. The company also sells crystal, china, and sterling silver goods, all carrying the cachet of the Tiffany name.
In addition to these items, Tiffany sells Tiffany & Co.-brand merchandise including timepieces and clocks, baby gifts, flatware, hollow ware (tea and coffee services, bowls, cups and trays), trophies, key holders, leather goods, picture frames and desk accessories. Fragrance products are sold under the trademarks Tiffany, Pure Tiffany and Tiffany for Men. Tiffany & Co. is also the creator of the Vince Lombardi Super Bowl Trophy awarded to winning N.F.L. teams annually on Super Bowl Sunday. The trophy weighs nearly seven pounds and is crafted completely from sterling silver.
The Tiffany & Co. holding company conducts all of its business through a host of subsidiary corporations. In 2005, approximately 80 percent of the company's net sales were attributable to jewelry.
A multifaceted retailer
Charles Lewis Tiffany and John P. Young founded the company in New York as a stationery and fancy goods store in 1837 and the first Tiffany catalog debuted in 1845. Though the company is synonymous with the finer things in life, Tiffany can also proudly say it has served its country -- during the Civil War, the company supplied the Union Army with flags, swords and surgical instruments. The first sterling flatware pattern graced Tiffany's shelves in 1871, and the famous "Tiffany setting" for rings appeared 15 years later. Tiffany branched out from New York and opened a store in San Francisco in 1963. The company ventured overseas in 1972 and opened its first store in Japan. After Avon Products acquired Tiffany in 1979, Avon executive William Chaney led a leveraged buyout of the company and took it public in 1987. Today, the company employs more than 8,100 people around the globe.
