ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

THE SCOOP

With around 200 attorneys working out of its single outpost in Manhattan, Patterson Belknap may seem like a modest operation relative to New York’s megafirms, but the firm holds its own. Handling litigation and corporate matters on behalf of clients from such disparate fields as media, private equity and Big Pharma, the firm also represents nonprofits and foundations on a wide range of matters.

A Distinguished Career

Patterson Belknap was founded in 1919. Leading name partner Robert P. Patterson was a Harvard Law grad, who interrupted the early stages of his legal career to fight with the New York National Guard in Mexico in 1916.

PBWT SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: Associates at Patterson Belknap are loving life, and they gush about the firm’s unique combination of a friendly culture and big name clients.

Associate Life

Satisfaction
•  "I am happy with the amount of responsibility I have been given as a young associate, and I have been given interesting assignments that require creativity and thinking."
•  "Patterson Belknap gives lawyers room to get substantial experience early on, and the people are pleasant—which is really about all one can ask for from the law firm experience. I can't think of anything I don't like about working here that I would expect to be different at any other ‘big’ law firm. (PBWT does ‘big’ firm work even if size-wise it's smaller than most—which I consider a definite plus.)"
•  "While there are certainly dull stretches of doc review and the like, there are many good substantive opportunities to participate at the highest levels of case management and strategy. Not only are my thoughts, opinions and ideas valued, they're also readily solicited. And, more often than not, I'm staffed on small teams directly with partners. Overall, I'm very satisfied."
•  "Lots of responsibility, interesting assignments, great firm culture—wouldn't want to be practicing anywhere else and am definitely satisfied with the job."
