Average pay relative to industryABOUT THIS COMPANY:
Love is in the airSouthwest Airlines is the largest domestic carrier in the U.S., flying over 2,800 flights a day to 60 destinations, which adds up to 65 million passengers a year. The airline has long prided itself on its low costs and number of passenger complaints, both among the smallest in the industry. Southwest keeps costs down in part because its fleet has only one type of plane -- Boeing 737s -- which eliminates the need to train pilots and mechanics for multiple aircraft. The airline also operates on a direct-flight model, so most Southwest flights are of the coveted nonstop variety, sparing customers the necessity of bolting through strange airports to catch connecting flights. In turn, this eases the customary anxiety about lost luggage. The airline aims to keep things light inside its planes as well -- flight crews are trained to sing upon takeoff and crack jokes while giving preflight safety instructions.
