ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

THE SCOOP

The history of Drinker Biddle is steeped in Americana. Founder John Christian Bullitt, a young Kentuckian, chose to locate his practice in Philadelphia on the advice of then Secretary of State James Buchanan. Bullitt arrived in Philadelphia on Inauguration Day of 1849 (then still in May, before the Lame Duck Amendment) and was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar on July 4. The firm opened as Bullitt and Fairthorne. Bullitt’s first client was the Bank of Kentucky, and he would spend the majority of his years as a lawyer in a 40-year pursuit to collect judgment in a fraudulent stock suit. William C. Bullitt, his direct descendant, is currently a partner in the firm’s Private Client Practice Group.

Drinker SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: While associates appreciate transparency in the compensation process, they’re not thrilled with below-market salaries. Still, most are willing to give up a little bit of cash in exchange for reasonable hours, a positive and collaborative culture and excellent training for junior associates.

Associate Life

Satisfaction

• “Our corporate practice group has a wide range of work, from traditional M&A to securities to venture capital. I get to work with some really interesting clients and that makes the work more interesting too. I have also had an opportunity to work on a few great pro bono matters and the firm has been very supportive of that work.”

• “I am generally very satisfied in terms of the quality and amount of work, but I believe the pay could be better.”

• “The partners by and large project a more friendly face than other firms, but behind that face, it’s still a big firm.”

• “Good working environment; interesting work; good people.”

• “I feel extremely satisfied with my job at the moment. I feel appreciated and valued by management and the other attorneys with whom I work, and I feel there are structured benchmarks for growth, with much current potential for growth.”
