SURVEY SAYS

Firm culture

Although the culture at Young Conaway is "mostly laid-back" and "friendly," the firm can be "much more formal" at times and "the culture differs per department." For example, insiders say that "the bankruptcy department is a friendly department with many young attorneys," but "the corporate department is more formal." One associate laments that "outside socialization may not be too high," but acknowledges that the problem "may be more attributable to the Wilmington nightlife, not the firm environment."

Tips from the inside

Personality important

"We are looking for applicants with great academics from good law schools," reports one junior associate. "Almost all of the folks we interview are at or near the top of their class and are also either on a journal or in moot court," he adds. Though "grades and writing sample are the most important," "Delaware contacts are a plus," according to one new associate, who tells us that being in the top 10 percent is, in fact, "not a requirement at all." Regardless, "personality is more important" at Young Conaway "than it is with a lot of the firms" and "people who are at ease and outgoing during the interviews tend to do better."
