Begun as a substitute bible study session more than 150 years ago and forever immortalized in pop culture by the Village People, the Young Men’s Christian Association today is the largest nonprofit community service organization in America.  The Y, as it’s sometimes referred to, runs 2,686 chapters nationwide and serves the health and social needs of 21 million men, women and children in 10,000 communities across the country.  The YMCA is also present in more than 120 countries around the world, helping an international community of at least 45 million.  Today, it provides child care services and youth-oriented programs, adventure guides that helps bring families closer together, health and wellness programs for members of all ages, and volunteers and financial assistance for communities in need.
