Decades of service

Wipfli LLP began in 1930 when Wisconsin native Clarence Wipfli opened an accounting practice in Wausau, Wis. (where the firm’s headquarters stand to this day). In 1942, John Ullrich became the firm’s first partner, and the business was rechristened Wipfli Ullrich & Co. a few years later. The firm’s expansion across the Midwest was propelled by its founders’ determination to recruit top talent and provide ongoing training for its employees.

Wipfli, which celebrated its 78th anniversary in 2008, now has 15 offices in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and over 800 employees. It’s also a member of Moore Stephens North America (MSNA), the North American branch of Moore Stephens International—one of the top-20 accounting networks in the world, with 366 independent member firms in 98 countries. As of 2008, Wipfli was ranked No. 26 on Accounting Today’s Top 100 Firms list by U.S. revenue. (The firm brought in $97.88 million in revenue for full-year 2007.) Wipfli was also rated one of the best accounting firms to work for by Accounting Today in 2008.

According to insiders, Wipfli’s corporate culture has been getting better in recent years. One source explains, “The partner in charge and other senior management have actively worked to improve the culture of the firm—and it’s working.” Sources also note that there’s a “much better focus on work/life balance,” and more of a “feeling of being part of a team than before these changes.” However, not all respondents believe they receive equal treatment. One colleague explains, “As a minority, I felt separate from my co-workers and, in some instances, treated differently—such as work volume, training and responsibilities.” Another insider adds, “Employees at this sector of the firm are very confused about what their role is and what their duties are.”
