ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

THE SCOOP

Willkie has all the history you could ask for and then some. The firm’s clients have ranged from inventors to industrial titans to elite financial institutions, and its attorneys have included presidential candidates, Supreme Court justices and governors. While the firm has just under 600 lawyers across the US and Europe, it has established itself as a New York firm through-and-through.

Politics & Innovation

Tracing its ancestry to 1880s New York City, Willkie began as Hornblower & Byrne, founded in 1888 by two attorneys and two clerks.

Willkie SURVEY SAYS

OUR SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: The relaxed, social vibe at Willkie means many associates feel like they’re working with friends. But some tedious assignments and micro-managing have left a few junior associates feeling that they haven’t had enough opportunity to flex their chops and practice advanced legal skills.

Associate Life

Satisfaction
• “There is a lot of grunt work to be done as a first-year associate at any law firm, but I've had several interesting research assignments that have kept me engaged. I've also felt that my opinion is valued and that I can and should speak up any time I think that I have something pertinent to contribute.”
• “I generally like the partners and associates with whom I work, and I have been able to handle a variety of interesting and substantive assignments, including a great deal of pro bono work.”
• “I've had the opportunity to act as lead associate on a number of interesting projects over the course of the last twelve months. Finding solutions to a number of unique challenges and having the responsibility for significant original drafting has been satisfying. That said, the constant expectation of availability can be draining.”
• “I think I'm about as satisfied as someone of my seniority can be. I am craving more independence, less micro-management, and some more important/interesting tasks. My job satisfaction is further lowered by the fact that the prospects for promotion in this office are virtually nonexistent.” [Washington, DC]

Tips from the inside

Vault’s Verdict: In the buyer’s market of hiring, Willkie has narrowed the pool of schools it turns to for recruiting. But as before, Willkie is looking for a culture fit, using interviews to find friendly extroverts with a sense of humor.
