ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Company History

In 1909 two Richmond attorneys, Lewis Williams and James Mullen, started a law firm specifically aimed to counsel businesses in an increasingly complex legal environment. Over the past 85 years, Williams Mullen has grown through a series of mergers with small but accomplished regional firms, opening additional offices throughout Virginia and across the pond in London. Now primarily serving corporate clients, the firm employs 238 attorneys in practice areas such as litigation, banking and labor.

SURVEY SAYS

Billable Hours

Billable hours pressure is a common source of stress for Williams Mullen associates. Not that they have too many, but rather that they won't be able to meet the firm's 2,000-hour requirement. A litigator says, "right now I have enough work to keep me busy during business hours, and a bit more on some days. Overall though, there is not enough work for me to reach my minimum billable goals set by the firm, so I am concerned this will end up being a negative thing at my review." At a firm where, according to one insider, "billable hours are the most important thing for young associate," this can cause some agitation.

Tips from the inside

Quality Hires

Williams Mullen targets the top 15 percent of students at well-regarded law schools across Virginia and the Carolinas. Beyond class ranking,, the firm's hiring criteria include prior work experience, law journal, moot court, undergraduate academic achievement and outside activities. According to associates, Williams Mullen has become more selective when choosing from applicants, and is almost prohibitively competitive for lateral hires. A source with an inside track to the recruiting committee warns that the firm "keeps increasing its selectivity." One relatively recent hire reports that the firm is looking for "someone who works hard and has a sense of humor."
