ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

THE SCOOP

Opening as a relatively small DC firm in 1983, Wiley Rein expanded from its original 39 attorneys to more than 130 attorneys in its first ten years of operation. The firm has remained loyal to its capital roots but now boasts more than 275 attorneys. Best known for its experience and connections in communications law, Wiley Rein is also home to a number of well-respected practices, including insurance, government contracts and international trade.

Growing Up on K Street

Wiley Rein was founded in Washington, DC by two attorneys with deep roots in the nation's capital: Bert Rein—a former U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for economic and business affairs—and Richard Wiley—former head of the Federal Communications Commission.

Wiley Rein SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: A collegial and friendly—if conservative—culture at Wiley earns high marks from associates, who also appreciate great relationships with partners. The two-tiered compensation system, however, gets mixed reviews.

Associate Life

Satisfaction
• “The firm has provided me with excellent opportunities to be substantively involved in cases, to appear in court and take depositions, to interact with clients, witnesses, and experts, and to attend programs and classes to develop my professional skill set.”
• “I would rate my job satisfaction higher if not for the pressure to work ever more hours.”
• “Terrific projects and cases, blue-chip clients, and great people to work with are the highlights of working at the firm. Good work/life balance (to the extent that is possible in big firm world), with reasonable exceptions. A good place to learn the craft, develop and grow.”
• “Steady, interesting work. Great support from colleagues.”

Tips from the inside

Vault’s Verdict: Wiley Rein would like to see a demonstrated interest in one of their practice areas, so be prepared to discuss your career goals during the interview process. And don’t be discouraged if the firm doesn’t recruit on your campus—applications from other schools are also welcome.
