ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Some sizing down, some expanding

Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek is the sixth-largest law firm in Wisconsin, with 123 attorneys. Although that's a long way from the three employees the firm started with when it was founded in 1943, growth isn't always a given. In 2005, WHD consolidated two offices into its Manitowoc location, leaving it with just three offices across the state. While it might be sizing down its locations, the firm is expanding in other ways. In 2005, Whyte Hirschboeck launched a new practice group dedicated to issues facing credit unions. Finance has been a successful area for the firm in the past. Other sizable practice groups include litigation, corporate and intellectual property. Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek also has a subsidiary business devoted to government affairs, WHDGA, which has been active in lobbying for stem cell research and recently brought on board several key staff members from the Christopher Reeve Foundation.

Tips from the inside

The long haul

The firm's recruiting materials emphasize that WHD is a place to develop one's career, not just a place to earn a paycheck: "If you're just looking for a job at a law firm, then we're probably not the place for you. We're interested in men and women who are looking for a career at our law firm." Whyte Hirschboeck interviews at law schools throughout the Midwest in its quest for candidates with "the following attributes: superior academic achievement, exceptional oral and written communication skills, strong work ethic and business development potential."
