Formerly known as MR Weiser, New York-based Weiser LLP was founded in 1921. Today, the firm has four offices in the metro-New York area, and a staff of over 600 that includes certified public accountants, certified financial planners and personal financial specialists. Weiser came in at No. 22 on Accounting Today's 2009 Top 100 Firms list, which ranks firms by U.S. revenue.

Weiser specializes in services for businesses as well as private clients, and has industry expertise in apparel and textile, construction, emerging technologies, family business, financial services, food services, health care, international business, manufacturing, nonprofit, professional services, real estate, retail and restaurants, textile rental, and wholesale and distribution. It also offers services to high-net-worth individuals and, like most financial services firms, has developed Sarbanes-Oxley compliance services in the years since 2002's legislative changes.

The office culture at Weiser is described as “very professional.” One insider notes, “You have the freedom to work with many clients.” Sources also say they like the “good hours,” which they put at anywhere between “40 and 50” per week. Indeed, the hours seem just right (neither too long nor too short), with the firm having a sort of “come and go as you please” type of vibe. One contact notes that although the hours are very good, he makes “frequent” weekend office visits-that is, “about once a month.”

Looking for some experience

Weiser openly requests employees for the New York and New Jersey regions. Those who wish to apply for audit, tax and consulting positions should have three to 10 years of recent public accounting experience, as well as strong analytical, interpersonal and communications skills. The ability to practice in a computerized work environment will also get you far. In addition, potential candidates should have a solid understanding of accounting, tax and business concepts, along with a proficiency in Excel, Word, and various tax and accounting software (see the firm’s website for the names of the programs).

More important, according to Weiser, employees must show the ability to identify key business issues and integrate their work with clients’ overall business objectives.
