Viacom is one of the world’s largest media companies—the diversified entertainment company has operations in two primary segments: cable networks and filmed entertainment. It operates more than 140 cable television channels worldwide (including MTV, VH1, Logo, Nickelodeon, BET, Country Music Television and Comedy Central), mostly through its MTV Networks arm, and approximately 300 branded websites. The company also has its hand in the businesses of movies (Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks), digital music (Urge) and online gaming (Harmonix, XFire). It sold its music publishing (Famous Music) to Sony/ATV Music Publishing in May 2007, for about $370 million.

Though the corporate environment varies widely among Viacom’s subsidiaries, an “energetic” and “laid-back” culture is cultivated throughout the company. Adds a source, “The people are extremely friendly, pleasant and the atmosphere is upbeat and young.” “Many employees are straight out of school,” says one insider. At Viacom headquarters, “there is no dress code. Many people have green hair and ripped jeans. As a matter of fact, it is encouraged so as to ensure a creative atmosphere.”
