ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

History

Midwest meets East at Vedder, Price, Kaufman & Kammholz, P.C. The firm was founded in Chicago in 1952, but has moved into the New York market with offices in New York City and nearby Roseland, N.J. More recently, in August 2006, Vedder Price opened a Washington, D.C., office, bringing the firm's office total to four, and its attorney headcount to 225. Among other practices, the firm offers corporate, litigation, and labor and employment services. Vedder Price recently expanded its offerings when it launched a 17-lawyer technology and IP litigation practice in June 2006. That same month, the firm restructured its fund formation practice; it now has 30 attorneys from fields such as corporate, ERISA and employee benefits, and tax to advise private equity and venture capital firms on the formation of hedge funds and other investment vehicles.

Vedder Price SURVEY SAYS

Firm culture

Vedder's happy associates praise the quality of work, level of responsibility and "amiable" environment. "I have from early on been given a tremendous amount of responsibility, client contact and the ability to work directly with each of the senior partners in my practice area," says a corporate finance attorney. "I have also been fortunate to have had a great mentor." An attorney in another department reports, "I work with really great lawyers who also are really great people. I am very happy with the type of work I am able to do and the level of responsibility I am given." A particularly cheery litigator adds, "Nothing could be improved on; it is the perfect law firm environment."

Tips from the inside

Hiring process

Associates call the firm's hiring process a "typical" search for credentials and "fit," though Vedder "does not require successful applicants to fit into a cookie-cutter image." According to a first-year, "The firm is looking to hire intelligent, hardworking applicants that are team players, but still self-motivated. However, the real emphasis within the firm is on those candidates that seem to be quality-driven." "In addition to exceptional academic credentials, which is a given," claims one insider, "Vedder emphasizes hiring associates with positive personalities and people skills." A senior associate offers candidates a piece of advice: "It is best to act and dress conservatively here, at least until people get to know you well and/or you already have the job (i.e., act maturely throughout the summer program)."
