ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Travers Smith is among the stronger firms in the mid- to high market, with an award-winning private equity group. A full-service firm with an emphasis on the corporate side and on private equity in particular, Travers Smith boasts a more collegiate feel than many of its rivals, and it is lauded for its traditional partnership structure and laid-back environment in a notoriously demanding industry.

Travers Smith SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: The work is demanding and diverse. But a “work-hard, play-hard” atmosphere helps smooth out the peaks and troughs, and on Fridays you’ll often find trainees, associates and even partners enjoying a pint. While some lawyers would welcome a “more structured bonus scheme”, others say the absence of target hours and excellent relationships with colleagues offer their own rewards.

A lawyer’s life

•  “The quality of work is high and, although demanding, is therefore interesting. In general, hard work is recognised and appreciated and the working environment is collegiate and friendly.” – Solicitor

•  “Very pleasant working environment. Firm could benefit from having a slightly higher, and more international, profile.” – Solicitor

Tips from the inside

Vault’s Verdict: At Travers Smith, the trainee application process is refreshingly straightforward, involving an online CV, a cover letter and two interviews. That said, it’s “very demanding”, and successful candidates demonstrate strong academics, a confident attitude and a personable nature. While there is no psychometric testing, hiring partners do administer the informal “room test”: “Could I share a room with this person for several months or years?“
