ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Firm history

Thompson Hine LLP got its start when A.B. Thompson founded a solo practice in Cleveland in 1893. In 1910 Thompson entered into a partnership with Charles B. Hine and, in 1911, with Walter L. Flory. The firm was known as Thompson Hine & Flory until 2001, when it shorted its name to Thompson Hine. The firm now has 350 lawyers in eight offices, including the latest one in Atlanta, opened in January 2006. Though the firm has branched out beyond its Ohio roots (Thompson Hine also has offices in New York, Washington and Brussels), it still has a strong presence in the Midwest. Approximately 300 of the firm's lawyers practice in four Ohio offices.

SURVEY SAYS

Atmosphere

Thompson Hine seems like the place to be. "I enjoy working at this firm," enthuses an insider. "I work with a number of supportive people who are always willing to help and who care about me as a person." "I enjoy coming to work each day," says another associate. According to a first-year, "The complexity of the legal work that I encounter on a daily basis is comparable to any large market in the United States. The people that I work with make my job especially fulfilling." Still, some lawyers wish they were getting more substantive work. "I enjoy my work, though I am concerned that I am not getting enough real litigation experience," says a Cleveland contact. "The partners are aware of this issue and are making efforts to ensure associates are getting exposure to the courtroom, depositions and mediations. I am impressed by the firm's strategic planning efforts and new views on associate business development; this is an encouraging change in mindset about the role of an associate -- we are now viewed as players."

Tips from the inside

Looking for a social fit

It's not always easy to get in the door at Thompson Hine. "We're pretty selective when it comes to hiring and we really do care about whether you will fit in socially here," says one source. "They look for top-tier law schools and good performance, or top performance at second-tier schools," reports another associate. "Law review is encouraged," but the firm is also into "the 'whole person' concept." In addition to "high-quality resumes," Thompson looks "for people with balanced interests who can interact with clients and others well." The firm "places some emphasis on attributes that nontraditional candidates bring, such as work experience." Thompson Hine tries to recruit folks who will remain for the long haul. "The firm is looking to hire ambitious, bright people that have a long-term interest in the firm," says a lawyer in the Dayton office.
