SURVEY SAYS

One big, happy family

It might be all the Miami sunshine, but Stearns Weaver associates are quite the happy bunch. "This is a great place to work and I couldn't be happier," declares a fourth-year associate. Stearns Weaver is a "great firm with great people," echoes a real estate lawyer. Insiders uniformly describe the firm culture as collegial, fostering relationships between partners and associates that are "the best I have ever seen," according to a junior attorney. "One of the best things about the firm is the culture. People are friendly and laid back, and genuinely like each other. It is not hierarchical. There is a genuine respect for people's lives outside the office," reports a litigator. Similarly, a mid-level relates that "I wouldn't want to hang out with all the partners in my department, but I feel like I could if I wanted to. Like any firm, when things are tight, folks get snippy, but there is never a question of respect." Overall, another source concludes that "the firm culture is fairly laidback. Most of the attorneys and staff have been with the firm for decades and it has a genuine family feel--though nobody would think of Gene Stearns as the kindly old grandfather!"

Tips from the inside

Search far and wide for the best

Stearns Weaver associates describe their firm's hiring standards as high, and believe their firm to be quite competitive. "We hire only a few people each year, and are pretty selective. We look for top candidates from first tier law schools, who have great personalities and are the kind of people with whom you'd want to go to lunch," reports a senior associate. The firm travels to top law schools around the country to find candidates who are in the top 25% of their class, and who have experience on a journal or in a clerkship. In terms of personality, the firm says that it is seeking "self starters requiring little hand-holding, who are self-confident and intelligent, and who have good work habits, a sense of humor, a well-rounded legal education and practical life experiences beyond academia."
