Southern Company is one of the largest electricity distributors in America. It is comprised of regulated utilities Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power and Savannah Electric, which have a combined generating capacity of more than 38,000 megawatts and service more than 4 million electricity customers in the southeast. Fortune magazine ranked Southern as No. 165 on its list of the 500 largest corporations in the United States in 2005. It reported earnings in 2007 of $1.7 billion. Southern's growing competitive generation business includes income from Southern in addition to the existing competitive generation revenue at its five operating companies.
