ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
Playing Sony’s tune (and games, movies…)
With more than 1,000 subsidiary companies, the Tokyo-based Sony Corporation is one of the world’s most visible forces in electronics and entertainment, as well as the world's second-largest music company. As one of the only electronics companies with manufacturing facilities and plants in North America, it is of special interest to U.S. job seekers. Sony makes a mind-boggling array of high-tech items, from LCD TVs and digital camcorders to sleek VAIO laptop computers and Walkman-brand MP3 players. But perhaps the company's biggest hit in recent years has been its PlayStation line (currently in its third iteration) of home video game systems. Other recent successes, meanwhile, include the victory of Sony’s Blu-Ray DVD technology in the ‘format war’ with Japanese rival Toshiba early in 2008. In fiscal 2008, Sony brought in massive revenue of $88.7 billion, generated by some 180,500 employees worldwide.
