ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Definitive member of the Magic Circle and one of the 10 largest firms in the UK by revenue, Slaughters is something of an anomaly. It does not have the gigantic international footprint one might expect from a Magic Circle firm, it is not a member of the UK Big Four and it gathers its impressive yearly takings from just four offices. A mere 750 lawyers do the firm’s bidding worldwide, and yet it remains one of the most profitable and respected firms in the world.

Slaughter and May SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: High-calibre work, excellent training, brilliant colleagues and no billable hours targets ... so what’s not to like? Oh, the pay could be a little higher, to reflect the firm’s reputation; the workload could be a little more predictable; and the culture could be a little more casual (though it’s far more friendly than outsiders assume). But all in all, associates and trainees alike appreciate working at “the most prestigious firm in the UK”.

A lawyer’s life

•  “The work is incredible—we really are at the vanguard of the developments in law.” – Solicitor

•  “Good work, and a very wide variety of work: whole of financial sector (from insurance to hedge funds). Lots of responsibility. What’s not to like?” – Solicitor

Tips from the inside

Vault’s Verdict: Insiders appreciate Slaughter and May’s straightforward assessment process (“no stupid tests or questions”), though they also caution that only those with “brilliant academics” will get the chance to interview. To proceed further, candidates must also be “intelligent, confident, and have interests beyond corporate law”.
