Butcher, baker, java maker


Best known for its baked goods, Sara Lee is also a leading producer of meats, beverages and personal-care products.  In addition to its own brand products (which are mainly baked goods), brands under the Sara Lee umbrella include notables like breakfast-time favorite Jimmy Dean, Senseo coffee Hillshire Farm processed meats, Ambi Pur home fragrance, Kiwi shoe polishes and Sanex bath and shower products.  Internationally, the firm controls several of the biggest-selling international coffee brands, such as Australia's Moccona, Denmark's Merrild and Holland's Douwe Egberts.  The company has 52,400 employees worldwide, a figure that has shrunk by more than half since 2006 and almost two-thirds since a restructuring effort began in 2005.

The door swings both ways

Several insiders expressed concerns over organizational changes at the company and the effects upon their jobs.  One staffer reckons that, due to the restructuring, “many of the longtime employees have become a bit cynical.”  The same staffer remains optimistic, though, and adds, “There is some hope that Sara Lee can get sales kick started but as of right now the company seems to be barely muddling along.”
