ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Marriage and divorce

Since its birth in 1906, Riddell Williams has married (San Francisco's 300-lawyer Graham & James in 1996), divorced (same firm, in 2000), expanded (up to 80 lawyers), contracted (now at 59), and today maintains just a single office, in Seattle.

Although smaller than some regional rivals, Riddell has the practice area range of a full service firm: litigation, corporate, real estate, tax, and intellectual property. A condominium owners' rights practice group is unique in Seattle and represents owners (exclusively) in construction defect litigation - alarmingly common in the Northwest. Washington Law & Politics magazine named four partners from this group to its list of "Super Lawyers" of the region: David Brenner, Paul Kundtz, Pat McVey, and group head Tony Rafel.

SURVEY SAYS

Hard work, cool environment

Riddell Williams associates say their firm is "about as laid back as a firm can be while still demanding top-quality work." Although some describe it as being "a bit hierarchical," the consensus among our contacts is that "the people at Riddell are extremely nice." Social events for associates, partners, and staff are held periodically, affording members of this otherwise family-oriented firm opportunities to get to know each other outside the office.

Tips from the inside

Summer program

Riddell associates come mostly from the firm's summer program. But judicial clerks and third-year law students occasionally gain entry. Their best bet is to check in after October first for word on the following fall's anticipated hiring needs. When seeking new talent, the firm keeps an eye out for lawyers with the usual indicators of excellence: law review, moot court, and class standing.
