SURVEY SAYS

A healthy balance

Preston Gates provides its attorneys with the "perfect balance between a sophisticated legal practice and an appreciation for a personal life." One insider notes, "People work hard when they need to, and the firm has high quality work. At the same time, personal time is completely respected. On any given day, most attorneys have dinner with their families or friends and then work from home if necessary to complete a task." Many attorneys describe the firm's culture as "informal" and "friendly." An associate explains, "There is such an open door policy that the most junior associate should feel no qualms about talking to the most senior partner. Attorneys often celebrate each other's birthdays and baby showers together." A single associate mentions that there isn't much socializing for young, single attorneys. A married associate agrees that the firm may "not [be] a place to go if you're young and looking for a good time."

Tips from the inside

Tough competition

Getting through the gates of Preston Gates is not an easy thing to do."If you know someone here and they like you that helps a lot," says one associate."Even so, a good pedigree is a must." Another mentions, "It is much easier to be hired as a lateral associate than to get hired right out of law school." The hiring process is competitive. An associate explains, "The firm tends to look for bright, successful, outgoing people with an entrepreneurial or business development-oriented personality." The interview process includes "an initial interview with a department partner; an additional interview with several partners and associates in the department; a final group interview with partners and associates from multiple departments; and an offer by phone and letter." The entire process lasts approximately three months.
