ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Firm history

Just shy of its 100th birthday, Powell Goldstein LLP now employs more than 300 attorneys, with approximately 225 at the Atlanta headquarters. The firm appears to be back on track with increasing profits (and a new ten-story Atlanta office space) after a spate of defections following the dot-com boom. Powell Goldstein -- also known as PoGo -- was the fourth largest law firm in Atlanta in 2003, up one spot from 2002, according to Corporate Board Member magazine. It also ranked 146th in the nation in 2004, according to the National Law Journal.

SURVEY SAYS

Pay and hours

Associates at the firm are pleased-as-punch with their take-home pay. As one representative respondent tells us, "My compensation is very good for the Atlanta market and the firm has always rewarded my hard work ... I feel my salary is in line with those of the firm's competitors and is more than fair [and] I am very well paid for the amount of time I have to spend on this job." The love affair ends when it comes to bonuses, with comments ranging from "Our bonus structure does not encourage me to work beyond my billable hour requirement" to "I don't think the bonus is worth the extra hours it takes to get it."

Tips from the inside

They want it all

Make sure your grades are top of the scale before sending that resume to PoGo, for as the PoGo insider puts it, "we concentrate on about 6-7 schools and the top tier at those schools." It's not all about grades though. One associate reports, "Our ideal candidate is one who has excellent achievements but the integrity to realize that quality of life more than outweighs working at one of the top 3 firms in the city. Powell Goldstein is competitive with other top-tier Atlanta firms. The firm usually does well with law students for whom quality of life and family issues are more important than compensation and perceived prestige." Insiders maintain that the firm does not have specific criteria, but "a strong academic performance and extracurricular involvement is important. Prior work experience also is viewed favorably."
