ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
Firm HistoryHaving recently celebrated its 175th anniversary, Potter Anderson is among the 10 oldest continuing law practices in the country. The Delaware firm considers itself a general practice law firm, but due to the high number of corporations and partnerships domiciled in Delaware, much of the firm's business focuses on corporate law and litigation.
The firm is not strictly departmentalized and new attorneys quickly gain experience in several areas of law. Most of the firm's practice is conducted in its Delaware office, but it has gained national attention for its representation of clients in courts nationwide. Representative clients include DuPont, Exxon, General Motors, Wal-Mart and Walt Disney. With respect to Disney, the firm was involved, in early 2005, in defending its client against a campaign to oust Michael Eisner as the entertainment giant's CEO.
Potter Anderson also has a lengthy history of public service. Firm lawyers have served as members of the Delaware Court of Chancery (considered by many to be the leading business court in the country), the Delaware Supreme Court, federal courts, and the United States Senate. The firm encourages its attorneys to participate in pro bono work and has an active relationship with Delaware Volunteer Legal Services.

Getting Hired
Tips from the inside
You gotta have it all
When it comes to potential associates, Potter aims high. The firm "looks for bright, enthusiastic and well-rounded applicants," says one insider . Additionally, the firm emphasizes "strong academics and good personality." These "very high standards" also take into account the applicants "extra-curricular work/achievements (i.e. law review, moot court, internships, etc.)" There's no question the firm's hiring process is "competitive" and "an applicant's academic achievements" are very important.
