ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
Success and expansionsPhelps Dunbar has enjoyed a long, prestigious run filled with high-profile clients, cases and lawyers. Founded in New Orleans in 1853 by Joseph Dirrhammer, it can probably safely be assumed that a firm that can survive the Civil War and a flood of biblical proportions some 150 years later has 150 more years in it. Name partners Esmond Phelps and Charles E. Dunbar, Jr., joined the firm in 1910 and 1915 respectively, with Dunbar going on to become National Counselor of the United States Chamber of Commerce and president of the Louisiana Bar Association. Other alums of the firm have held impressive posts as well: 19th-century partner William Wirt Howe was appointed to the Louisiana Supreme Court, John Weinmann became ambassador to Finland and Reuben Anderson was the Mississippi Supreme Court's first African-American justice.
