SURVEY SAYS

Enjoying life in the 'best offices in Boston'

"For a large firm," says a sixth-year associate, Palmer & Dodge is "a great place to work." It's "the most humane and reasonable big firm you are likely to find," declares another attorney. The firm combines "challenging work" with a "low-key" environment and relatively reasonable hours. A contented second-year muses, "I did not expect to enjoy life at a big law firm, but I have discovered that I do. Everyone that I work with is supportive and kind. The work I do is enjoyable." Moreover, she adds, "My workload is manageable, and I feel I'm getting the opportunity to do real work, as opposed to just menial tasks." Other attorneys praise the "variety of work available to junior associates."

Tips from the inside

Room for a select few

Competition for a spot at this Boston Brahmin can be tough. The firm describes its summer classes as "small and select." With fewer than 100 associates in the entire firm, Palmer & Dodge just doesn't hire in large numbers like "mammoth law firms." As a second-year associate notes, "Because we are on the smaller end of the large firms in Boston, we hire relatively few associates." In fact, "we tend to hire only enough law school students for the summer program as we have slots available for full-time employees." The number of open slots varies "from year to year, depending on economic demand."
