ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

More than just plating glass

Ever cracked a car window or scraped some paint off a car’s bumper?  Odds are that window and that paint came from PPG Industries, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of coatings and (until recently) glass for automobiles.  PPG also ranks among the world’s leading producers of glass and chemicals for industrial and specialty uses, and provides paint and coatings to the residential and commercial markets.  Recently, PPG has focused on global expansion, especially in the European and Asian-Pacific markets.  Of the firm’s $15.8 billion in 2008 sales, less than 50 percent came from the United States and Canada.  The company now operates more than 140 manufacturing facilities in more than 60 countries.

SURVEY SAYS

Manufacturing malaise

In terms of salaries, sources at PPG are very pessimistic.  “The company just cut our base salaries in half,” says one, calling the decision “very disappointing.”  Another says PPG “is offering buyout packages to [its] highly paid hourly workers aged 57 and older.  They [management] say we make so much money but we’re the best workforce they have.”
