Occidental Petroleum (a/k/a Oxy) is the fourth-largest U.S. oil and gas company based on market capitalization. Through its subsidiary Occidental Oil and Gas Corp., the company explores, develops and markets crude oil and natural gas. Its Occidental Chemical Corp. division manufactures and markets a variety of basic chemicals, polymers and plastics. In the United States, Oxy is the largest oil producer in Texas and the largest natural gas producer in California, and also has productions in Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico. In the Middle East/North Africa region, Oxy holds assets in Libya, Oman, Qatar and Yemen. Oxy also participates in a joint venture in the trans-border Dolphin Project that brings natural gas from Qatar to markets in the United Arab Emirates. Latin American operations include production in Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador.

Numerous Oxy sources point to the firm’s international operations as a sign of strength, reflecting how the company does a good job on integrating its various units. “The transfer of people from domestic to international and [vice versa] has a huge impact on company culture and progress,” says a Houston insider, who also states that the firm’s workforce is represented by many “different ethnic groups.” In addition, if one is so inclined, “a career path can easily be chosen based on the preferred location of work,” whether domestic or overseas. The dress code is “formal from Mondays to Thursdays with the exception of Fridays, [when] casual wear is expected.”
