ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

The big Finn

Possibly the most famous export of Espoo, Finland—eclipsing even the popularity of Formula One driver Kimi Raikkonen—is wireless giant Nokia.  The company is a force to be reckoned with in the mobile handset market with approximately 850 million people from all walks of life using its devices.  Nokia is the world’s No. 1 maker of cell phones, beating out rivals Motorola, Siemens and Samsung, and is also the world’s largest digital camera manufacturer with 140 million camera phones sold in 2006.  The company is made up of four divisions: devices (which involves manufacturing of mobile devices), services (multimedia Internet services), market and solutions (consists of R&D, sales and distribution) and NAVTEQ (digital map data and content).  A joint venture, Nokia Siemens Networks, began operations in April 2007.  It combines Nokia’s business networks and Siemens’ carrier-related operations for fixed and mobile networks and is 50-percent owned by each company.

Nokia culture seems to be strongly influenced by the ethos of Espoo.  The company “takes great pride in its matrixed culture,” notes one respondent.  “Highly collaborative environment; flat organization structure,” free-associates his colleague, “very collegial atmosphere.”  “Politics exist but are well under control.  Most colleagues have respect for one another, and relations tend to be cordial,” says a source.  One insider does caution that “communication is very direct.  It can sometimes be perceived as aggressive.”
