ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Much more than chocolate

Nestlé is the world’s largest food company.  With global headquarters in Switzerland, the company is probably best known in the United States for its chocolate Nestlé Crunch bars and Nestlé Nesquik powder.  The conglomerate also leads the world in mineral water (Perrier) and coffee (Nescafé and Nescafé Taster’s Choice), and it owns a formidable share of the gourmet ice cream market.  Nestlé USA also makes products in a range of other categories such as milk products, infant and sports nutrition, chocolate and confections, refrigerated and frozen food items, and pet foods.  Brand names under the expansive Nestlé umbrella include Coffee-Mate, Edy’s ice cream, Kit Kat, Crunch and Smarties candies, Lean Cuisine microwave dinners, Nescafé and Nestea beverages, Ice Mountain, San Pellegrino and Perrier bottled waters, and Alpo, Fancy Feast, Purina and Friskies pet food.  For the first half of 2009, the company reported a net profit of CHF 5.1 billion or $4.98 billion.

SURVEY SAYS

A collaborative culture

Nestlé insiders have positive things to say about the culture in their workplace.  One explains: “The culture at Nestlé is very collaborative, so you never feel intimidated by anyone.  Your peers and superiors empower you to make educated decisions, making the environment very entrepreneurial.”  Another happy contact says that it is “truly a rare [find] in today’s economy to work for a company that cares so much about the brands it represents and the people it employs worldwide.  It’s no wonder people literally work for the company for decades and still feel as excited about the company as they did their first year.”

Tips from the inside

Top recruits for the tops in chocolate

In 2009, Nestlé was named one of America’s Most Admired Companies by Fortune for the 12th year in a row.  Applicants can set up an online account through the company’s career site and submit applications to U.S. and international positions.  There is a smorgasbord of information for those in college or MBA programs seeking internships and postgraduation jobs.  Nestlé also attends the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, National Black MBA Association and National Society of Hispanic MBAs’ career conferences.  College internships are offered to students entering their senior year of study in engineering, food science, operations, industrial management, logistics or supply chain management.  First-year MBA interns are involved in a marketing internship program.
