ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Large and in charge

Headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina, Nelson Mullins has nine offices, which are located in most of the major cities between Atlanta and Washington, D.C. Founded in 1897, the firm is not only one of the oldest South Carolina-based legal practices, but it is also now -- with more than 330 attorneys -- the largest. Nelson Mullins is also the 116th largest law firm in the nation, according to the most recent National Law Journal rankings. The firm represents many of the Southeast's largest corporations, including the leaders in such industries as finance, textiles, health care, and automobiles. A general-practice firm, Nelson Mullins's specialties include start-up assistance for growth companies, complex multi-action litigation defense, and the representation of regional underwriters and investment bankers.

SURVEY SAYS

Mixed reviews on culture

Nelson Mullins' "culture is somewhat balkanized-very informal in Myrtle Beach, very 'corporate' in Atlanta, etc.," reports a litigator. "Generally, however, the partners are very accessible, and the atmosphere is relaxed." The difference in cultures and attitudes among the offices is absolutely subjective and varied, with some calling the firm "on the conservative side" politically and others describing it as "socially progressive, fiscally conservative." But taking all opinions and locations into account, it is viewed by its attorneys as "relatively diverse and open-minded."

Tips from the inside

They want it all

Though Nelson Mullins "focuses on the well-roundedness of the applicant," it is also relying "more heavily on grades/rankings than it did in previous years" in making hiring decisions. Unsurprisingly, academic achievement is "very important," and the firm prefers candidates who are "well-credentialed," which by Nelson Mullins' standards consists of law review experience and a ranking in the top 15 percent of your class. But there is a way around the academic roadblock: work your connections. That's right, if you "have a good local connection that will bring work to the firm," you'll get a second look depending on the office you're chasing, says an associate: "Local connections matter more in the 'outer' offices (Myrtle Beach, for example), while credentials are more essential in Columbia and Atlanta."
