ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Space exploration 101

You may have been aware of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as the first to send a man to walk on the moon and may have heard the famous phrase “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”  But did you know that NASA is also responsible for performing test flights and missions, managing programs within the United States and with other countries to co-develop scientific and engineering resources, and directing aeronautical and space activities?  The agency also goes way back to 1915 when it was still called the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which developed and built wind tunnels and conducted flight tests with both models and full-scale aircraft.  In addition, they, with the help of the U.S. Air Force and Bell Aircraft, built the first supersonic aircraft and led to innovations such as swept wings for airplanes.

Mission possible?

Generally, NASA associates find the work environment “very casual” and “very academic,” with flexible working hours.  A source says, “I've had great bosses.”  Another adds, “dress code is relaxed for those involved with engineering and science activities, more formal for those on the managerial side.”  In addition, NASA offers several opportunities for leadership training and research."

Tips from the inside

Hiring overview

NASA hires more than just astronauts.  Scientists, engineers, computer programmers, accountants, writers and maintenance workers are among the many employed by the agency, and they plan to hire more engineers in the coming years.  Job seekers can browse the NASA Jobs website (nasajobs.nasa.gov) and apply online.  The careers site also has a resume builder—hosted by USAJOBS—where applicants can post their resume online (tailored to specific positions an applicant may be interested in) and receive notifications on their applications.
