ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
It’s the economy, stupid
NERA Economic Consulting makes its buck off understanding what many people can’t: the economy. The New York-based firm provides economic advice, analysis, expert testimony and regulatory insight for clients throughout North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific region. Employing more than 500 professionals, including 425 economists, the firm has been creating strategies, studies, reports, expert testimony and policy recommendations for government authorities and the world’s leading law firms and corporations for half a century. It specializes in bringing academic analysis, objectivity and real-world industry experience to bear on issues arising from competition, regulation, public policy, strategy, finance and litigation using hard economic data to make its case, drawing on its professionals’ expertise in statistics, econometrics, game theory, mathematics and computer science.

Getting Hired
Tips from the inside
Financially focused
Interviews at NERA are "very rigorous" and, given the nature of the work, it's no surprise that they are heavy on "economic theory and practical application questions." In China and Japan, we're told of four tests including "financial, language, Excel and personality." A Shanghai source notes that "it's very hard to get an interview opportunity."
There are usually two interview rounds, sources tell us, including "an economics multiple choice test" and "one interview that involves a prepared presentation." A senior consultant in Australia provides a bit more detail: "Usually, it's a three-stage process. First, there's a meet-and-greet over coffee; then an interview with the standard technical economic questions; and finally, a candidate presentation to the director on an assigned economic problem." Another source describes the presentation as about 15 minutes in length, with the question "provided a few days before the interview." A sample question: "What's your understanding of consultancy?"
