ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
Leading IP and Corporate lawFounded in the 1930 by former federal judge Hugh M. Morris, Morris Nichols is considered Delaware's No. 1 patent and intellectual property law firm. In the IP Law & Business 2003 Patent Litigation Survey, Morris Nichols ranked first in the number of patent cases filed and fourth nationally in total appearances in patent cases. In the 1960s, the firm helped to establish the nationally recognized "inevitable disclosure" rule, which prohibits employees from taking a job that will inevitably lead to the use or disclosure of trade secrets. Twenty years later, Morris Nichols attorneys successfully obtained trade secret protection for widespread computer logic diagrams. More recently, the firm prevented a competitor of client Merck & Co. from marketing a vaccine using Merck's trade secrets.

Tips from the inside
The ideal candidate
What's the profile of the ideal Morris Nichols candidate? An "Ivy Leaguer from Delaware who wants to settle in Delaware forever," says one associate, perhaps only half-joking. It's true that Morris Nichols can seem "more selective" than other Delaware firms and is definitely looking for "high quality individuals who have the potential to make partner and be here for a long time." The firm wants "applicants with great academic records and genuine interest in the practice areas" that Morris Nichols specializes in. There's not "much of a snob factor regarding what schools you went to," but the firm is definitely looking to hire "exceptional students with strong writing, research and communication skills." While some feel that the firm is essentially looking for "workhorse with good grades," others admit that the firm "does consider outstanding applicants from lower tiered schools."
