SURVEY SAYS

"Sophisticated and interesting"

Associates at Moore & Van Allen rave about the "sophisticated and interesting" work they do for clients including Wachovia and Bank of America. Despite the big-name clients, the environment at MVA is almost universally described as "laid back and friendly" and "accommodating of individuals' personalities." Partners are pleasant, for the most part, and "yelling, demeaning behavior would not be tolerated" at MVA. After-hours interaction among lawyers happens, but it's not a central part of the firm's culture: "While some lawyers socialize together and most lawyers have good relationships with their peers, many opt not to socialize with one another since they spend so many hours per weeks together already."

Tips from the inside

Difficult and competitive, but worth it

Moore & Van Allen recruits on-campus at top law schools in the Southeast (with stops at Harvard, Yale, Michigan and Texas, as well), and favors candidates who are in the top 20 percent of their class and/or on law review. According to one insider, the firm "places a lot of importance on resume prestige"; and others confirm that MVA is "a difficult and competitive place to get a job but well worth the effort." Beyond the numbers, associates say that "the standards have become somewhat murky in recent years," but in general the partnership is seeking "motivated, energetic, communicative, intelligent applicants." It also helps to have "a sense of humor that is tempered with an understanding that we have to act as professionals in all dealings with the outside world."
