ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

The seeds of success

Monsanto is a leader in seed science.  The St. Louis-based firm uses biotechnology, genomics and molecular breeding to alter seeds (primarily cotton, corn, soybean and canola) for greater productivity and resiliency to pests.  Its dominance can be gleaned from industry estimates that 70 percent of the world’s insect- and herbicide-resistant crops carry the company logo.  In addition to the seed and biotech industries, Monsanto also maintains an Agricultural Productivity unit, with major products in weed control and increasing the “efficiency of milk production in dairy cows.”  The company’s best-selling product overall is Roundup, the world’s most popular herbicide.

Rocking the boat?

“If you consider yourself to have a super extreme work ethic,” says one source in research biology, “then Monsanto is a great place for you.”  An HR contact agrees, saying Monsanto’s culture “gives people a chance to make bigger, earlier and more frequent contributions than would be the case in many companies,” because “the degree to which [it] emphasize[s] and encourage[s] personal and group development is unusual in the business world.”

Tips from the inside

Looking for a few good Monsantoneans

The careers section of Monsanto's website offers detailed descriptions of jobs available, along with a database of opportunities searchable by job group, location and department.  For example, the page provides information on some of Monsanto’s main career tracks, including positions in the IT, seed production and science and technology fields.  The site also has information on open positions for college students and recent graduates.  Interviews center around behavioral questions conducted by the manager on campus, and the results are generally known two weeks later."
