    ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

Miller & Chevalier is no slouch

    Miller Chevalier SURVEY SAYS

    "Open and caring"

"Open and caring" is how one associate describes Miller & Chevalier's culture, and despite a "business-oriented" overall attitude, the firm wants associates to "achieve a work/life balance." A veteran notes that employees are "incredibly friendly" and "there is a reasonable amount of outside-work socialization" among associates. "There are a lot of different social events, including weekly lawyers lunches, weekly lawyers happy hours and monthly all-employee lunches," explains one newbie. "There is a general understanding that small things help boost morale."

    Tips from the inside

    High standards
Miller & Chevalier's hiring criteria may vary, we're told, but all agree it's not an easy hire. As one midlevel associate claims, it's harder to get in without prior experience, and "given the specialized practices of the firm, [the firm] relies mostly on hiring laterals." A senior attorney says partners are looking for candidates who are "diverse and exceptionally bright," and others think the firm wants "strong writers with top grades." Luckily, alma maters are not as important, but the firm's small size raises the bar. "We're a small shop and don't hire too many people. Otherwise, it would be easier."
